On 8 October, we celebrate International Research Software Engineering Day and the people who build, maintain and support the software that enables modern research. From developing innovative tools to ensuring research is reproducible, reliable and accessible, research software engineering (RSE) plays a vital role in scientific research worldwide and across disciplines.

Established as a global event by the International Council of RSE Associations, it was first held in 2021. Since then, it is celebrated annually on the second Thursday in October.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all research software engineers for transforming ideas and scientific challenges into software that advances knowledge. We would also like to thank everyone who contributes to the Helmholtz RSD, helping to make research software more visible, accessible and sustainable.

Happy International RSE Day!
